IT’S MY NUMBER I CAN MOVE IT WHERE I WANT: MOBILE NETWORK PORTABILITY

IT’S MY NUMBER I CAN MOVE IT WHERE I WANT: MOBILE NETWORK PORTABILITY
.

Mobile number portability (MNP) has so far been implemented in more than 60 countries worldwide. Several emerging countries have recently introduced Mobile Number Portability (Qatar launched MNP on the 31st January 2013), while others are planning to launch this year such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Costa Rica, Paraguay and Tanzania.
The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) has mandated the deployment of the Mobile Number Portability Scheme across the Nigerian Telecommunications sector.  This scheme launches on the 22nd of April, 2013.
WHAT IS MOBILE NETWORK PORTABILITY (MNP)?
Mobile network portability is a porting service that allows you to change to a service provider of your choice while maintaining your phone number of your previous service provider. It simply means a user having an ETISALAT number 08095372345, can change to MTN, GLOBACOM ,or AIRTEL  network without changing the number 08095372345 therefore maintaining his phone number. The process of changing is called porting.
(ETISALAT 2014) “Means you get to keep your mobile number and switch your network .This provides you with a greater flexibility by enabling you to switch between mobile operators without having to give up or change your existing mobile number. When you switch you don’t have to go through the stress of telling your family, friends or colleagues that you have changed your number-it remains the same”. Therefore is an important tool to avoid losing contacts and carrying many phones around.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MOBILE NETWORK PORTABILITY (MNP)?
(Internet connect 2012) “It also Reduces switching cost in aspects like - cost of updating marketing and business materials, notifying family members, repainting business vans because of changed numbers, etc.’’. This means an individual or organization need not to spend in trying to retain his previous contacts or business information. Also the moving around with multiple phones by individuals will be averted.  It also boosts the level of competition between service providers and act as incentive for service providers to improve on quality of service and customer satisfaction.

WHAT TO CONSIDER BEFORE PORTING?
      • TIMING
Are you planning to travel during the porting process? There may be an impact on international roaming if you travel during the porting process and if a prior understanding is not reached with the current mobile service provider.
• VALUE ADDED SERVICES
You need to know that value added services differ from one mobile service provider to another. The services that are on offer may not be the same as what you previously had. For prepaid users, you need to know that all existing credit will expire upon successful porting and will not be carried to the new mobile service provider. Therefore, you are encouraged to plan accordingly.
• SERVICES
You need to understand that the services, call charges and packages offered by the new mobile service provider may differ from your current mobile service provider. Do your research first.
WHAT ARE THE PORTING REQUIREMENTS?
As you are changing your network provider you will need a new SIM from the network you are joining which render the current one invalid after you have been ported, therefore if you are porting back to your previous network a new SIM will be required. It is pertinent to know, an MTN number CANNOT be migrated to Visafone or Starcomms, because those two are CDMA, not GSM networks. That means, phone numbers from all the four GSM networks in Nigeria (MTN, Etisalat, Airtel, Glo) can be used across all the networks.
